Student Election Clerks

What do Election Clerks do?

Election clerks work under the supervision of an Election Judge to ensure that polling places operate smoothly and voters’ questions are answered correctly during Early Voting and on Election Day.  

• Election clerks are paid an hourly rate for their work

  • NOTE- Different counties pay different hourly rates 

• Election clerks who are bilingual or have technical skills are highly in demand

• Serving as an Election Clerk means that you get the chance to serve your community while also building your resume

Can I be a Student Election Clerk?

Yes, if you meet the following qualifications:

• At least 16 years old on Election Day;

• Enrolled in a public, private, or qualified home school;

• Be a U.S. citizen;

• Have the consent of your parent or legal guardian to work the election;

• Have the consent of your school principal (or parent/legal guardian for home-schooled students); AND

• Complete all required election worker training programs

How to Apply

• Fill out the Student Election Clerk Application and Permission Slip (PDF).

  • Your parent or guardian signs the Parent/Legal Guardian Permission portion.

  • Your school principal signs the School Principal Authorization portion. 

    • Make sure your absence from school in order to work during Early Voting or on Election Day will be excused.

• Send your application to the local elections officials conducting the election that you want to work as an election clerk (county clerk/elections administrator, city secretary, school superintendent, etc.)

  • Try to send your application at least 60 days prior to Election Day

• If selected, attend the required election training class

• Work at the polls as assigned during Early Voting or on Election Day.
