College Student Voter Registration

Questions to Ask Yourself: 

• Are you currently registered?

  • If so, you have to update your voter registration if you’ve moved since you last registered (even if it's to a different floor in your dorm or a different apartment near campus), you can see the address where you’re currently registered here.

• Where do you want to be registered to vote? 

  • There are two options for college students to register to vote:

    • your permanent address (e.g. parents’ or caregivers’ address) or

    • your college address (e.g. dorm, off campus housing, campus PO Box)

• Do you want to vote in-person or by mail?

  • If you want to vote by mail in your permanent address’ local elections but you go to school in a different county, then you qualify to vote by mail, and you should register in the county where your permanent address is located.

  • If you want to vote in-person where you go to school, then you should register to vote in the county where you go to school.

Voter Registration/ Apply to Register to Vote:

• Deadlines: 

  • AT LEAST 30 DAYS BEFORE ELECTION DAY

• Process: 

  • Online: 

    • Previously unregistered voters in Texas cannot register to vote online, but they can fill out an application through the Secretary of State’s office or using the SOS’s form, print it out and mail it. That can be done here. 

      • You do need to buy and use a stamp if you print it out online. 

    • You can also fill out an application online and get a pre-stamped form mailed to you that you then have to sign and mail back. 

      • There are options to do that like Register2Vote.org and texas.turbovote.org

    • You are not registered until you have filled out the online application, printed it, signed it, and mailed it to your local County Voter Registrar - you can find who that is here.

    • If you are already registered to vote, but you need to update your registration’s address, you can do that here.

  • In person:

    • You can register to vote at your local County Voter Registrar’s office in person. Find the one for your county here.
