Registering to Vote in Texas

YOU HAVE TO REGISTER TO VOTE AT LEAST 30 DAYS BEFORE ELECTION DAY!!!

Am I Registered to Vote?

• You can check your voter registration status online at the following link: Sec. of State: Am I Registered to Vote?

  • To find out if you’re registered, you’ll need to provide your birth date and one of the following pieces of information:

    • your VUID that’s found on your voter registration card, or

    • your Texas DL number, or

    • your name and the County you live in

How Do I Register to Vote?

• If this is your first time registering to vote, then you can register by:

  • Completing the voter registration application found at the following site Sec. of State: Voter Registration Application.

    • Fill in the required information, print, sign & mail your completed application directly to your County’s Voter Registrar;

  • Requesting a voter registration application from Sec. of State: Request for Postage-Paid Voter Registration Form. 

    • The Sec. Of State’s office will mail a postage-paid voter registration application to the address you provide which you then mail to your County’s Voter Registrar; 

  • Contacting or visiting your local Voter Registrar which you can look up here: Sec. of State: County Voter Registration Officials and following their instructions.

• If this is your first time registering to vote, AND you are renewing, replacing or changing your contact information for either your Texas Driver’s License or State Identification Card online, then you have the option of registering to vote online through the DPS’ website: Texas DPS: Driver License Renewal, Replacement, Change of Address or Change of Emergency Contacts

  • You can also register to vote by visiting a Volunteer Deputy Voter Registrar who can assist you in filling out a voter registration application and they can turn in the physical copy of your registration application to your County’s Voter Registrar.

• However you register to vote, you should receive a voter registration certificate in the mail in approximately 30 days from your County’s Voter Registrar.  

• As long as you registered AT LEAST 30 DAYS BEFORE Election Day, then you can vote either during Early Voting or on Election Day.

I Moved or Changed My Name, How Do I Update my Voter Registration?

• If you’ve recently moved or changed your name, you can update your voter registration online at the following link: Sec. of State: Voter Name and Address Change

  • You can also contact your County’s Voter Registrar for more information on how to update the name or address on your voter registration.

What if I moved but Didn’t Update my Voter Registration in Time?

• You may be able to cast a Limited Ballot:

  • If you’ve moved but you forgot to update your voter registration at least 30 days before Election Day, you can cast a Limited Ballot containing only statewide offices and any other offices that are common between your former county of residence and your new county of residence.

• You can only cast a Limited Ballot in-person during the Early Voting period and only at your County’s main early voting location.  You can contact your County’s Early Voting Clerk to find out which location is the main early voting location.

  • If you’re eligible to vote by mail, you can also request a Limited Ballot by mail by contacting your new County’s Early Voting Clerk.
