Language Accessibility

Both the Voting Rights Act and the Texas Election Code require that all election materials (e.g.- ballots, instructions, voter registration applications, polling place signs) in certain states and counties (see list below) must be provided in languages other than English every election.

What non-English Languages are Required for Election Materials in your county?

● Statewide (all 254 counties in Texas)- Spanish 

● Dallas County- Vietnamese 

● Harris County- Chinese (including Taiwanese) and Vietnamese 

● Maverick County- local American Indian tribal languages 

● Polk County- local American Indian tribal languages 

● Tarrant County- Vietnamese

Voters Can Use Interpreters or Translators at the Polls or when Voting By Mail:

Whether voting in-person or by mail, voters who cannot speak English, or who communicate only with sign language, can use an interpreter or translator to help them read their ballot and communicate with election officials, regardless of whether the voter and the election official can speak the same language. 

● The voter may select any person other than the voter’s employer, an agent of the voter’s employer, or an officer or agent of a labor union to which the voter belongs. 

● If the voter cannot read the languages on the ballot, the interpreter or translator may also act as an assistant for the voter, but they must follow the voter’s directions on reading or marking their ballot. 

● If the voter is deaf and does not have a sign language interpreter who can accompany them to help communicate with the poll worker or read the ballot, the voter should contact his or her local election officials before the election and request assistance.
